why your teen does what they do

(For parents and teachers)

A lot of teens hardly get any discipline, and that being so, many of them don't register what is good and what is bad in their decisions. A lot of teens can't tell what's right from wrong in some cases. And that's what makes them do what they do. From getting beyond drunk to making some serious outfit choices, teens can often do some really questionable things. And it usually isn't their fault exactly. The relationship of brain development and the sad sad risk of making poor choices is referred to as psychosocial maturity.

In psychology, maturity is the ability to respond to the environment in an appropriate manner. Maturity also encompasses the entire status of being aware of time and location and when its the right time to make certain decisions and how to approach certain things. Like "when is it the right time to go and paint an entire wall of property that isn't actually mine?" close to never is the real answer. If you can consistently make rash and impulsive decisions it really effects your maturity level, and that's what makes teens so quick to do so many things. Usually the status of maturity is copied from the most trusted guardian or adult and in this case, if you're constantly around immature people, the behavior will eventually stick to you. Sometimes even the maturity level shifts can depend on the shift away from reliance on guardianship, or the oversight of an adult in decision making acts.
